Land

Be sure to see our Land Gallery with pictures of the ranch.

Grass LandThe ranch has 8,940 deeded acres and 2,560 acres of state land lease. There are 29 pastures and 4 primary hay meadows that make up the deeded acreage while the state lease consists of 4 pastures, each pasture being a section in size.

The pastures are in good shape with careful attention being made to any wind or water erosion. Any areas of potential erosion are dealt with promptly. Rangeland grasses are multiple, consisting of warm and cool season varieties. Grass species most frequently seen are:

Imigs like to run cattle on grass until the first of the year, then cake and grass until the grass gets snowed under. If that happens then they start feeding cake and hay.

Ranch fencesFences

Fences are a very necessary and important part of any ranch. The border and cross-fences are in excellent shape. Most of them are 4-wire barbwire. Posts are wood instead of steel because steel posts tend to sink in the sandy soil.

Shelter belts & hay

Shelter Belts

Shelter belts are extremely valuable in the Sandhills and Imigs have worked hard at maintaining and adding shelter belts. They have planted over 20,000 trees since 1984. Not all trees live due to the high attrition rate when first getting them started.

Hay

In a decent year the ranch will produce around 5,000 round bales off the hay meadows.
